Adventure Borealis

We offer accessible natural history excursions
in Interior & Arctic Alaska

Join mycologist Christin Swearingen on a fun mushroom walk in the forest trails of Birch Hill Recreation Area. You can discover more about the jobs mushrooms do in the ecosystem, learn how to recognize certain edible and poisonous species, and be delighted by the tiny details of the fungal world that will change how you view the forest forever!  We will be walking (very) short distances on well-packed trails.

When: August 30, 2023– 6:00-8:00 pm
Where: Birch Hill Recreation Area (meet at the old warming hut)
What to bring: Dress for light rain and mosquito protection

Bring a lunch and come out to Murphy Dome to pick berries, enjoy fall tundra colors, and savor the last of summer in our backyard. With naturalist guide Ryan Arash Marsh, we will look for migrating alpine birds and learn about uses of various plant species that we encounter. Expect to hike 1-2 miles including cross-country through the shrubby tundra. Special edition berry buckets provided!

When: Aug 26, 2023 – 10 am – 1 p.m.
Where: Meet at the tower at the top of Murphy Dome
What to Bring: lunch,  binoculars if you have them. Dress for the weather (can be windy up there). Trekking poles are handy for walking across tundra.

All donations will help to launch Adventure Borealis natural history programming and to support programs focussed on inclusivity and accessibility for members of our community traditionally marginalized in outdoor recreation and adventure spaces.
